Do I need to be really fit to do Karate Training?

No as Karate training will enhance strength, coordination, stamina, balance and flexibility. And what’s more, you are learning to defend yourself at the same time as you exercise!

In addition, Karate also trains the mind, which can result  in improved self-awareness, discipline, confidence & determination.

Which style of karate do you teach?

We teach Shotokan karate. It is one of the most popular styles practiced by millions of ordinary people worldwide. We occasionally also include other techniques from other Martial Arts especially for self defence purposes.


How do I get my coloured Belts? 

Although every person is different and will probably progress at different rates, generally speaking gradings take place every three months up to 1st Kyu Brown Belt with a minimum of 6 months until 1st Dan Black Belt.

For younger children the time scale can be increased by offering half Grades every three months etc. up to junior black belt. This is because children develop and learn at a different rate to adults.

What is Shotokan Karate?

Shotokan is a style of karate, developed from various martial arts by Gichin Funakoshi (1868–1957) and his son Gigo (Yoshitaka) Funakoshi (1906–1945). It's one of the most widely practiced forms of karate worldwide.

What makes Shotokan Karate different from other styles?

How fit do I need to be to start Shotokan Karate?

Like many martial arts, you do not need to be in excellent physical shape to start Shotokan Karate. Your fitness will improve as you train.

What is a typical Shotokan Karate class like?

A typical class may involve a warm-up, basic techniques (punches, kicks, strikes, blocks), kata (formal sequences of movements), and kumite (sparring).

What equipment do I need?

To start, you will typically need a gi (uniform). As you progress, you may need additional equipment such as belts, mitts, shin protectors and weapons such as Bo staff, Tonfa, Sai etc. .

How often should I train?

The frequency can depend on your personal goals and availability, but most beginners start with one or two classes per week. many also train at home to practice the techniques they learn in classes

How long does it take to earn a black belt in Shotokan Karate?

The time it takes to earn a black belt can vary significantly, typically between 4 to 6 years, depending on factors like frequency and intensity of training, individual skill level, and the specific requirements of the dojo or karate association.
